In 1967, while teaching in Houston, Texas

I introduced Maurice Sendak's new book

Higglety Pigglety Pop!

or There Must Be More to Life

to my students.

This wonderful book inspired

my attempts at drawing.

After finding a bottle of ink and a crow-quill pen,

I began what was to become my medium for the next 25 years.

Later, in New York City, I was introduced to Mr. Sendak

at his publisher, Harper & Row,

and was able to thank him personally

for the inspiration.
